Research Challenges

Three key Challenges, one scientific focus

Nowadays, to deepen the knowledge of the Earth System requires a holistic approach that integrate all its components (Geosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere and Atmosphere). The dynamics and interaction of its processes have direct impacts on our society. Therefore, the scientific research must provide effective answers of how the Earth works, how we can manage the geological risks and how we can take advantage of the natural resources in a sustainable way.

This new holistic perspective is useful to transfer the geological knowledge generated to other research fields and, thus, to be applicable in other terrestrial (or planetary) environments. The current direction of the Geoscience research requires to clearly define the objectives and action plans focusing on the needs (i.e. assessment and mitigation of the geological risks and sustainable use of the natural and energy resources) of our society in the near future.

Our 3 identified research challenges are integrated in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set by the United Nations organization (UN). More specifically, our research is closely related to the goals 7 (affordable and clean energy), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), and 13 (climate action). Our research, developed within the Life research area, is carried out applying cutting-edge techniques following a real multidisciplinary approach, which promotes the integration and collaboration with the other two CSIC research areas (Society and Matter).
