Elisabet Beamud, del Laboratorio de Paleomagnetismo (CCiTUB-GEO3BCN), participó en una nueva sesión de muestro arqueomagnético en el yacimiento arqueológico de la cueva del Gegant el pasado viernes, 19 de marzo, junto a Joan Daura y Montse Sanz, investigadores del Seminari d'Estudis i Recerques Prehistòriques de la UB, y Miguel Garcés, del Instituto de Investigación Geomodels y departamento de Dinámica de la Terra i l’Oceà de la Universidad de Barcelona (UB).

La cueva del Gegant, ubicada en el término municipal de Sitges en la comarca del Garraf, es conocida por haberse encontrado en ella diferentes restos de Neandertal. En concreto, y entre otros restos, se encontraron en esta cavidad los fragmentos de una mandíbula perteneciente a un individuo que habitó la cueva hace entre 100.000 y 40.000 años. Esta mandibula fue estudiada por Daura y Sanz en el año 2005.

El objetivo de esta actividad de muestreo es datar con precisión los materiales de relleno de la cueva y los niveles que contienen los restos de Neandertal mediante magnetoestratigrafía así como buscar variaciones climáticas a partir de la susceptibilidad magnética y análisis isotópicos. En total, se tomaron 75 muestras para realizar análisis de magnetoestratigrafía y medida de la susceptibilidad magnética a lo largo del perfil en el que están trabajando, según explica Elisabet Beamud, de Geociencias Barcelona (GEO3BNC-CSIC).

Varios monitores de la Federación Catalana de Espeleología acompañaron al equipo investigador para ayudarles en su acceso al yacimiento, ubicado en una cueva marina cárstica de dificil acceso.

Las muestras del registro obtenidas en este sesión se analizarán en el Laboratorio de Paleomagnetismo de GEO3BCN-CSIC. Algunas de ellas, recogidas por Daura y Sanz, se enviarán a Angel Carrancho, de la Universidad de Burgos, para realizar medidas de propiedades magnéticas complementarias sobre unos niveles que contienen estructuras de combustión.
