Coronavirus outbreak has had a huge impact not only on our health but on all spheres of our life: from social relationship to the way we travel or work. The pandemic has also changed the PhD working process and, especially, how the thesis are being defended. Coronavirus brought us the online thesis defense.

The 6th edition of the Geosciences Barcelona Photo Contest has been held this 2020. The 12 most voted photographs were announced last 23rd of december during the GEO3BCN Winter Activity, which was held online.

CSIC has paid the anual tribute to all of its employees with 25 and 50 years of service. This year, two researchers form Geosciences Barcelona are among the honored employees: Joaquina Álvarez-Marron and Jaume Vergés.

Santiago Giralt gave the talk “The study of climate and climate change” on November 26. The talk, which was held online, was atended by 35 participants. This activity is part of the Open STEAM teaching innovation workshops that help teachers to update their knowledge so that they can introduce the scientific method to primary and secondary school classrooms. With a hands-on approach, these activities help teachers to learn scientific experiments that are suitable for pupils of all ages. The Open STEAM teaching innovation workshops are organized by the catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRi).

Expominer outreach talks and workshops will be held online this year under the name of MinterMat 2020.There are 16 talks and workshops scheduled that will be carried out by researchers from several institutions like Geociencias Barcelona (GEO3BCN-CSIC), ICMAB-CSIC, IDAEA-CSIC, Universitat de Barceona, Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB) and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).

Two pictures taken by Santiago Giralt during a fieldwork campaign in Greenland in 2019 have been featured in the book 'Images of Arctic Science'. The book presents the best photos submitted to the 'INTERACT Photo Competition' organized by INTERACT, a network of research stations in the Arctic.

Irene Pérez Cáceres, researcher at GEO3BCN-CSIC, has participated in the first edition of “Outono Xeolóxico” (Geological Autumn), an outreach event organized by the Montañas do Courel Geopark (Galicia). Last 4 of October, Perez led one of the scheduled fieldtrips.

November’s volume of Quaternary Science Review publishes a review of the book 'Quaternary ecology, evolution and biogeography', recently written by Valentí Rull, researcher at Geosciences Barcelona - CSIC (GEO3BCN-CSIC).

'RawMatCop Academy, Copernicus for RawMaterials' course will be held online on 13, 15, 20, 22 of October from 9.30 till 13.00 (CET). Application for this course ends on October 2. This course is a joint initiative of EIT RawMaterials and Copernicus and is endorsed by the European Federation of Geologists.
