Abstract

El 7 de septiembre de 2017, cerca de la media noche, ocurrió un potente sismo enfrente de las costas del Pacífico Mexicano (08/09/2017, 04:49:46 UT, Mw=8.2). Se registraron más de 100 personas fallecidas por colapsos y se estima que los daños ascienden a aproximadamente 1500 millones de dólares debido a los daños provocados en alrededor de 40,000 construcciones. Una de las sorpresas iniciales del sismo es su mecanismo focal ya que se trató de un sismo de fallamiento normal y no un sismo de subducción. Este es uno de los sismos de mayor magnitud con este mecanismo focal reportado, hasta ahora, en los catálogos globales. Otra característica relevante es la larga y numerosa secuencia de réplicas que provocó y la variedad de mecanismos focales asociada.

Apenas 12 días después ocurrió otro sismo en territorio mexicano (19/09/2017, 18:14:47 UT, Mw=7.1), pero este último en el centro del País y muy cerca de Ciudades densamente pobladas como la Ciudad de México, Puebla y Cuernavaca. Si bien la magnitud de este sismo (Mw 7.1) es considerablemente menor a la anterior, debido a su cercanía y características particulares, provocó importante destrucción en las ciudades mencionadas y sus alrededores. La cifra oficial de fallecidos es de 369 personas. Sólo en la Ciudad de México, más de 5000 viviendas resultaron dañadas de las cuales alrededor del 40 % presentaron daño total.

A diferencia del sismo del 8 de septiembre, este sismo presentó muy pocas réplicas y de magnitudes muy pequeñas, pero debido a su posición y a la distribución de estaciones sismológicas y acelerográficas de diversas redes, éste podría ser uno de los sismos mejor registrado en México.

En este seminario se presentarán los resultados, algunos ya publicados y otros en proceso, de diversos análisis sismológicos de ambos temblores.
