GEOSPEECHES 2023: Empowering Junior Researchers in Geosciences

Geosciences Barcelona and the Faculty of Earth Sciences of the University of Barcelona organized GEOSPEECHES 2023, a new event which aims to empower junior researchers to share their work. PhD candidates from CSIC and UB showcased their research through posters presentations in the Faculty’s hall.

The main goal of Geospeeches is to foster communication among students in the doctorate programmes coordinated by the faculty. These programmes include the Programa de Doctorat en Ciències de la Terra and Programa de Doctorat en Ciències del Mar, both of which are represented in the Doctorate Commission of the Faculty of Earth Sciences.

Geospeeches arises from the observation that communication between doctorate students typically remains confined to their own research team, or, at best, extends to students within their own department or institute. To bridge this communication gap, this initiative aims to create synergies among students, enabling them to better organize themselves, propose new events, and participate in the government structures related to their doctoral studies.

Estefania Bravo, a PhD Candidate from GEO3BCN-CSIC, presented her research titled ‘Reconstructing the Adria Plate by integrating the Apennines and Dinarides fold belts across the Southern Central Mediterranean.’ Alongside Bravo, 20 other PhD candidates had the chance to discuss their research results. Notably, some of these candidates collaborated with GEO3BC-CSIC researchers, including Oriol Vilanova and Baoquin Hao, who also presented their PhD work during the congress.

At the event’s conclusion, participants took charge of selecting the committee responsible for organizing the next GEOSPEECHES. Estefania Bravo will be part of the new organizing team.
